According to a report by Bloomberg News on Friday, Twitter Inc has closed two of its three offices in India. The company shut down offices in New Delhi and Mumbai, while the office in the southern tech hub of Bengaluru, which mainly houses engineers, is still operational. Last year, under the leadership of new owner Elon Musk, Twitter had fired over 90% of its staff in India, which amounted to just over 200 employees. The move was part of a broader strategy to reduce costs globally but it left just over a dozen staff in the Indian market, which has tremendous potential for growth. Twitter and other Big Tech firms, such as Google and Meta Platforms, are relying on the vast potential of the Indian market to find new users online. However, they also face strict content regulations in the country. The recent job cuts by Twitter in India have primarily affected its product and engineering teams, including corporate communications, marketing, and public policy departments. The layoffs also extended to offices in Dublin and Singapore. Twitter has not yet responded to requests for comment.
