- On Sunday, Meta's CEO Mark Zuckerberg declared the launch of a new subscription service named "Meta Verified," which offers paid verification, as per the company's announcement.
- By paying a monthly fee of $11.99 on the web and $14.99 on iOS, Instagram and Facebook users can now submit their government ID to receive a blue verification badge.
- In the post, Zuckerberg stated that the introduction of this new feature aims to enhance the authenticity and security of their services.
Meta has historically offered verification badges to notable users such as executives, politicians, media personnel, and organizations to establish their legitimacy. The company's new subscription service bears similarity to Twitter's updated service, Twitter Blue, which grants users a verification badge upon payment of a monthly fee.
Twitter initially launched Twitter Blue in November, but it was withdrawn after users misused the paid option by impersonating famous individuals and brands. The updated service was launched in December after Elon Musk, the new owner of Twitter, delayed the launch. Musk has claimed that the new verification system will "level the playing field" and give "power to the people."
Meta has impersonation protections in place with its Meta Verified subscriptions, according to a company spokesperson. Users must fulfill minimum account activity requirements, be at least 18 years old, and submit a government ID that matches their profile name and photo to be eligible. Subscribers will also benefit from "proactive monitoring" for account impersonation.
The company spokesperson mentioned that Meta will not modify accounts that are already verified as the service undergoes testing, and businesses are not currently eligible to apply for Meta Verified. Users will be unable to change their profile name, username, date of birth, or profile picture without reapplying.
